alsike clover

Two years ago we had a really wet summer and clover took over one of our 
pastures.  2 yearling paint colts got severe poisoning,  Their legs and all 
the white skin on their bodies swelled up horribly and then alot of the skin 
died and sloughed off in great chunks,  We had 3 vets until one diagnosed it 
and then we took them off the pasture.

It was really sunny and the clover sets up a photosensitivity.  There is 
also liver damage.

Anyhow, some of the hair has grown back after 2 years but there are still 
big bald patches and the knees and fetlock joints seem enlarged.

We haven't started either colt yet so we don't know if there is any 
unsoundness or if it's just thickening of the skin.

My advice...don't take any chances with clover of any kind in your pasture.

Oh yeah, my neighbour with beef cattle says that they get it to.
