RE: VT 100 & over riding

Teddy stated <<<< A steward WOULD help. MANY people are reluctant to
complain to ride management, afraid to make waves, but a STEWARD's JOB is to
hear about rule infractions, investigate and DO SOMETHING!!!!>>>

I offer the duties of the steward as delineated by the AHSA; A steward
should clearly understand that he has no authority in connection with the
management or the judging of a competition but should point out in a
diplomatic manner any instance where rules are not enforced. He should
immediately report to the appropriate officials any violations of the
rules...

Teddy, I do not see this aiding the conditions under discussion in the
slightest!

Also she stated<<< If YOU have not been there, you DON'T KNOW!!!>>>

After more than 26,000 miles on our horses and being associated with the
AERC since 1977, having been involved in international competition, both
Arlene and I on either the AERC Board and/or AERC Committees for most of
that time I believe I can say "I HAVE BEEN THERE"

Perhaps there is a way off the horns of this dilemma. It is called
education. Have you seen any definitive articles in the AERC News about heat
stress lately? Perhaps if the membership cares enough some of our Vets could
be asked for such information. Have you seen any suggested guidelines for
Ride Managers? Perhaps if the membership was interested they could persuade
some ride managers to write an article regarding the problem of rides being
held under stressful conditions. Then there is the use of peer pressure!
Have any of you thought about writing your own article for publication in
the AERC News about your concerns? How about less public bitching and more
constructive work in the effort to promote GOOD practices in endurance
riding.

If 10% of the effort expended on line through Ride Camp were directed
towards some articles for the AERC News, constructive articles please, the
News would become one of the major sources of information for horse users. I
challenge most of you to such an effort.

What do I hear from out there???

You don't get it!!!! These people are just like you and me, but they get
caught
up in their goal to finish or to win or whatever....at the later parts of a
ride, PARTICULARLY a 100, they are NOT usually (applies to many, not all) in
a
frame of mind to make sound judgments.

If YOU have not been there, you DON'T KNOW!!!

A steward WOULD help. MANY people are reluctant to complain to ride
management,
afraid to make waves, but a STEWARD's JOB is to hear about rule infractions,
investigate and DO SOMETHING!!!!
