Sorry, yall, the Y chromosome is NOT part of an X!  Yes, it is true, the
sire gives the Y BUT if it is a female offspring, he is also giving an X as
well!  The 23rd chromosomal pair for males is XY, and females XX.  So female
offspring get an X from both parents; males get an X from mom and a Y from
dad.
Yes, DNA mitochondria is inherited from the mother...the mitochondria is
where cellular metabolism takes place.
Besides the mitochondrial DNA, you get HALF of your chromosomes from mother
and HALF from father.  50%.
There is some very interesting research going on relating characteristics to
WHICH parent you got a chromosome from but that is far from the scope of
this quick note to yall.
Other factors, such as size of the uterus, (which DOES make a difference in
size of foal), and upbringing,  is environmental, not genetic.
More and more things these days are showing up as genetic, but that does not
mean you cannot modify the tendancies!!
Hope this clears things up a bit.
