This is a rather interesting concept.  The main problem with its 
implementation is that usually there are not large groups of endurance 
contestants riding together.  Often 2 or 3 friends together, but not enough 
to need a "road captain".  (Someone can correct me if I'm way off base on 
this).  From the sound of it, the situation on Oakland Hills was unique, or 
at least I have never experienced one like it.  But anything can happen ......
