For horses who have this kind of reaction, a combination of Xylazine
(that's the one - otherwise known as Rompun) and Torbugesic (only can be
given by vets - controlled substance) works really well.  The Torbugesic
sort of locks down their feet.  Then they want to press their heads
against you.  I had a mare who was dangerous on Rompun, but my vet at
the time (a tiny little lady who didn't "thunk" well) used this combo on
her many times with great results (culturing/treating uterine
infections, treating a sutured digital artery, etc.)
