Ride Vets and Innuendo

Mark Cohn demonzbegone@hotmail.com
Dear Ridecamp : I am not a very experienced endurance rider...but ,in life experience ...well....I have some . Here are my thoughts on the ride vet topic : each ride should have at least one LICENSED vet in current good standing with their state's board . Said vet should have a valid and current DEA license which would enable them to obtain and carry such things as euthanasia drugs . Though I truly don't know ,I am pretty sure that the average Joe cannot go down to the drug store and buy euthanasia drugs for horses ,and there probably are not alot of vets out there who would be willing to supply an "amateur" (no matter how experienced) with drugs capable of killing a large mammal ,when the ramifications of a bad mistake could cost the supplying vet his/her license (assuming they actually have one !). I have heard of a vet using Nolvasan to kill horses and I guess that you CAN buy that over the counter but I think when people train their mounts for several months in anticipation of a ride ,they should expect and are entitled to expect an absolute
medical professional and a completely professional experience .
I can sure tell when my horse is "off "...there is a big difference between lameness and metabolic issues and those of a catastrophic nature...who negates what on the highest level ? I'd expect a vet.Pure and simple. And in today's litigious society ,I think having a licensed opinion is probably a lot less expensive than a major liability suit for a mistaken judgement call made by someone who wasn't licensed .Thats all.
