Completion awards for those who complete. Nice Try awards to those who fall
off! No saddles allowed. I'm still thinking about allowing simple bareback
pads (girth and pad ONLY, no stirrups [dangerous on a bareback pad anyway],
no dee rings to attach stuff to). LOL. >>

When I was a kid getting ready for my very first CTR, I got something stuck
under my cinch and made a gall on my mare. I was mortified, and wanted to
have it healed up in time for the ride, so I rode bareback on the cattle
range (central Idaho--your basic vertical terrain) and chased cows that way
for darn near a month. I was young and tough then, and I never once came
off, but I have a tendency toward allergies, and with riding nearly 7 days a
week, anywhere from a couple of hours up to 8 or 10 hours some days on that
sweaty horse (summertime, of course) I was a rash from the top of one cowboy
boot to the other. Was never so glad to see a saddle again in my life! Have
never ridden bareback since, for more than a quick warm-up walk-jog around
camp on a well-broke horse the night before a ride, and have NO intention of
ever being that miserable again! :-) (BTW--the strategy worked--the gall
was healed by ride time, and I was 2nd in the Junior division to
now-FEI-rider Suzanne Hayes and beat out all the local adults for the local
awards... And yes, there's another good example of a top-notch endurance
rider who got her start on CTR's!)
