phenytoin sodium

Looked up this medication and it is no less than Dilantin, an old-time
med for epilepsy. My horse vet, not surprisingly, was unaware of its
use for this and asked if anyone had any experience with this for
chronic azoturia as he'd found reference to its use in some books or
mags. Any thoughts? I told him that it would be useless in endurance
as it would be for sure a banned substance, and my feeling is that if a
horse needs this for ordinary performance, then it shouldn't be doing
that job anyway. I do have some problems with azoturia in Dorika
sometimes. Our soil is poor in Selenium and her supplements ran out as
the race horse owners have discovered it and bought out the entire
supply. I'm taking steps to avoid this problem in the future, but the
management is important. I told the vet that if the bottom line was
that she couldn't work too hard, then that's fine, I'll wait for the
boys to come along...one is almost 2 now and we are beginning to
socialise him for work.
Meanwhile we are trying to deal with a reasonable nutritional solution
along with the right work regimen.
