managing pastured horses

Hi Terry - If I were you, I would not put myself at risk by turning out
any boarders' horse with that gelding. I have boarded horses, and am
considering boarding one at my new place, and in my experience, the best
situation is to give boarders separate turnout from your own horses,
preferably individual turnout for each, even if this means segmenting
your pastures up a bit and giving them each a little less space. Turning
the boarders' horses out with yours risks not only horse injury, but
person injury as well. If your boarder wants to go get her/his horse
from the field, and has to battle it out at the gate to get the horse by
a pushy pasturemate, the person may lose the battle!

While I was in between houses this Winter, I had the opportunity to
board my horse out at a place that had individual turnouts. This was
nice! I could get my horse anytime I wanted, without worrying about
getting trampled. She never got so much as a scratch on her, although
she had a large paddock to run and play in. All the horses seemed happy
because they could see each other and had adjacent paddock buddies. It
seemed much easier for the barn manager as well - bringing in and
turning out. It was Winter, so I didn't mind so much that my horse
didn't have a huge pasture to roam around in all day, but you can still
do that for your horses if you want. I think it pays (in more ways than
one) to keep your boarders as safe as possible and make their stay
convenient for them.

Just my opinion - not intended as a lecture :)

Chelle
