Back to bits - I have a good text on bitting and tack that I used in college.  It's somewhere at home, so I'll try to look it up for you tonight (probably still in the box from when we moved - don't even ask how long ago <that> was).  By my recollection, the taxonomy used by that text matches what Sue describes.

I would call it a shankless Mullen.
Rather than depending on people who have manufactured and sold bits and other
tack for a very long time and people who have raised and trained horses all
their lives, who would you depend on? Someone who you don't know, who may or
may not have a clue, who posts to this list?
It really doesn't matter to me what anyone calls anything, but I do feel that
many who rely on this list as a source of information are not well served by
some of the misinformation that is served up by others who don't always seem
especially well informed either.
Just an observation from a long time lurker.
