RE: Drugs and advertisements

I've copied the partial list of permissible/prohibited
substances from the webpage for those of you who can't
access the web.

Please remember that the non-permissible list is substances
that are prohibited DURING competition. Technically this
is from the time you vet your horse in until you receive
your completion. There is nothing that says you can't
administer most of these substances (e.g linaments)
 before or after the ride.

AERC is not trying to prohibit the use of substances
such as yucca, msm, dmso, penicillin/procain, bute, etc in the
performance horse's life, just not DURING a competition.
The horse should not be influenced by any drug during
a competition. Some substances such as bute remain in the
blood stream for a fairly long time, and I agree that the
public should be better educated on the nature of these
substances - what is considered a pharmaceutical level,
what the 'lifetime'of these drugs are in the bloodstream,
etc. I do believe a guideline of some sorts should be
published.

But (hint) anybody can do the research. The AERC rules
are very clear - what is not so clear is how
we as individuals use these drugs/substances - and what
the immediate and long term effects of them are. We need
to be better educated. It seems that the AERC veterinary
committee feels the rules are clear enough as they are,
so if we as riders and competitors want to be better educated,
maybe we should take it upon ourselves to find out what
is considered a pharmaceutical level of bute, what the
level of salicylate in yucca is, and how persistant it
is in the blood stream.

Any volunteers?

Steph
