There are books out there on how to figure out your feeding program.  Like how
much protein?  How much calcium to phosphorus?  One is by Lon Lewis and called
Feeding and Care of the Horse another is called Horses In Health and Disease
by James Naviaux probably others also.  It is not a complicated formula but on
an older mature horse you could have a very unbalanced ration with the horse
seemingly OK.  Sometime down the road they creator.  I got into terrible
trouble with a young horse but that showed up real quick.  There are several
laboratories that test hay and the tests I have run cost in the vicinity of
$20 each, well worth it.  If you need special tests like for selenium that's
$50.  Most don't need that one but if you do then it is worth the cost.
