While I agree with Linda that this was not the issue that started this
thread, I have to ask--if the horse needed bute 5 days before a ride, why is
he at the ride?

Again, that isn't the point!!! The question is: Do the membership know what a drug is? (Especially in "natural" ingredients or in supplements)? If a drug is used (purposefully or inadvertently) on a horse WHO IS NOT NECESSARILY INJURED, what is a safe time to wait before you could bring that horse to a competition and be within the rule of No Drugs? (Examples - Sedated for dental work, or a palpation in an uncooperative mare, etc.)
As far as I am concerned, the discussion isn't revolving around "banned horses" or "bringing a horse back too soon and running on the ragged edge". It's "Do the consituents of AERC have the knowledge and guidance to comply with the policy?"
I emailed Duane Barnett to see if the Drug List that he mentioned from the AERC office could be printed in the EN and then distributed to new members along with their rule books and membership cards. Folks who have been in the sport for a long time seem to have a feel for this, but the new folks do not. We need to mentor and guide them. Since "No Drugs" is a cornerstone for endurance competitions, we need to include this.
Look how many people are feeding biotin or general vitamin supplements that contain Yucca, never realizing it was a drug. How many more are there that we haven't heard from? They aren't purposefully violating the rules. How can we help them comply?
