How hot was it and how aggressively did you try to cool him? I overheard
a lady at Biltmore tell someone her horse was a Morgan. It was large,
black, and darned near obese, obviously a very easy keeper. Fat is a
good layer of insulation and holds a lot of heat in. If your horse is
thick bodied with a layer of fat, it takes quite awhile for the heart to
keep pumping that blood to the surface trying to cool it. Next time, try
getting him in the shade and really putting the water on and scraping it
off and see if it helps...and of course, I recommend getting good at
sponging on the fly.
