I have always thought of keg shoes as preshaped, prepunched shoes that need minimal working to fit the horse.  They often come in fronts and hinds shapes to minimize working them.  They can be hot or cold worked.

I don't know how true this is, but my farrier said they used to come in a keg by weight, hence "keg shoes".  (As opposed to making your own shoes from plain bar stock aka pieces of metal).
