heart rate question

My ridig buddy and I were out training for a 100 mile race last night.
She hooked her gelding up to a heart rate monitor. His heart rate
dropped going up hill. It went from 140 approx on the flat to 85 while
climbing the hill at a walk or trot. These are long steep hills.
Any ideas. everyone elses horses heart rate gets higher on the hills.
