Compiegne

A translation of the message dated 5/3/99:
"The site will be maginificent, the start on one of the most beautiful
racecourses in the world.
" 160 km in a forest area (territory/estate) very well maintained with
excellent gorund (soil).
"The route will be very rolling but with a few changes in elevation (short
but steep).
"Don't hesitate to contact us for all information."

For those of you interested in the l'histoire of Compiegne, where the 2000
championships are to be held: Joan of Arc was impriosoned there. There is
a rich art museum, a former royal palace, built by Louis XV. It was the
residence of the court of Napoleon III during hunt season. In this century,
the Armistice (WWI) was signed in a railway car in the forests of Compiegne.
The same railway car (although not at Compiegne) was used by Hitler to
receive the surrender of France in 1940 (cruel irony). The city is only
about 47 miles north of Paris, in Oise. Industry there has included
manufacturing of automobile tires, soap, and biscuits.
