Absence of rain rot

Some time ago there was a discussion about rain rot, and Heidi commented
that sometimes a deficiency in selenium can make a horse prone to it.

I bought my gelding in the fall of 1996, and he had rain rot in the spring
in '97 and '98, though by the second time around I'd gotten pretty good at
treating it early before he lost much hair.

Started supplementing selenium/vitamin E last fall because we are very
deficient in this part of the country, though his locally produced sweet
feed does have some added.

And this has been our first spring without any sign of rain rot!! Yippee!!!

Who knows. Other things have changed as well -- we now use a Woolback pad
and he was groomed a little more often this spring. But it sure is nice
not to have to use that Equitaine on his sore skin.
