My last chestnut Arab had about a 8" diameter patch like that on his left
shoulder.  Met his last owner and she admitted that her App had chased
him through a fence there and hit it so badly that he couldn't lower his
head to eat or drink for awhile...so, the trauma theory stands on all
mine.  I'm sure there are others that it doesn't work for though.  I
would wonder if the neighbors are buying horses that scrape a certain
area getting into a trailer or something.
