Re: RC: Handling Pastured Horses

<snicker> I have one of those too. Sure beats running *my*
butt off chasing horses out of where they're not supposed to
be. All I have to do is pick up a rock or horse apple and
pose threateningly at the offender... Maggie is off like a
shot to take care of it for me. OTOH, my horses have also
learned to be expert Dog Stompers for those unsuspecting,
unfamiliar canines who mosey into their pens.

One other suggestion for the person who originally asked...
a water pistol works pretty well for reinforcing the Voice
of God (which every human herd boss should have). It's handy
to be able to affect behavior from a distance without
spooking the one you've got a hold of. I've also been known
to tag offenders with small rocks or horse apples. It's
gotten to the point where all I have to do is reach for the
ground (which unfortunately has some unintended side effects
when simply picking up that brush I dropped <oops>, so I've
been modifying my approach). Whatever you decide to use,
just think it through first and be consistent.
