John, 

I don't  know about the horse supplements, but I have the same problem
with discs in my back, and have been taking a Chrondroitin and
Glucosamine supplement, plus a new Arthritis medication called
"Arthrotec 75".  I am NOT suggesting that you give these to your dog,
just that you ask the vets if there is something along these lines you
might try .  (A long time ago we used Pedazone(sp/) with  my doberman
but there is probably something better now they can do.  good luck! I
know how hard it is to watch your dog suffer....Maureen
