rails to trails

depends on location - there is the John Wayne trail out here (Cascade
Mountains, eastern slope, Washington State), which is a conversion from
railbed to trail. It is the rail bed itself - gravel. Good footing,
generally.

It is worth being involved and advocating for the trail without asphalt.

One other good aspect is that the trails are wide.
