sportsmanship/passing

In response to the post about passing when the trail is too narrow or
otherwise unsafe: if you are requesting permission to pass, yes it can
be frustrating to have to wait but it's much safer. The best way to
handle this, I feel (and what is common in my area) is to tell the
person or people ahead that you'd like to pass as soon as they reach a
reasonable spot. This way they know of your intentions and can look for
a wider, drier, or whatever place where it can be done safely. This is
especially good if they ar newer to the sport, or their horses are,
since they have the choice of ground. And if you're a newbie and your
horse is nervous, please let the riders wanting to pass (or that you are
passing, if that's the case) if there's anything you'd like them to be
aware of. If it's safe footing-wise and I'm passing seasoned horses,
I'll pass at a trot. But if the rider or horse I'm passing is nervous,
I'll be glad to slow down to a walk or give them a wider berth or
whatever. We all want to be safe and help our fellow riders be safe,
after all!
Mickie
