sportsmanship

Here's one I've been wondering about for a while:
We all know that the slower rider is supposed to "yield the trail" to a
faster rider who wants to pass, but we have all been in the situation where
the trail is too narrow to allow passing--it is equally frustrating to be
the "passer" and the "passee" in this situation. So, if somebody is
"expected" to actually step off the trail into bad footing (if this is even
possible) who should it be? The passee--because they are supposed to
"yield" and because they are probably travelling slower? Or the
"passer"--who is the one who 'created' the situation by wanting to pass?
(Ever hear the saying "the hungriest one should cook?"
Many of these situations result from marginal riding skills on somebody's
part. I have had riders ask me to stop and let them pass because they
couldn't control their horses comfortably from behind me, but their horses
were not fast enough to catch me... So if I let them by, I would then have
to ride slower than them the rest of the day???? Also, many of these
passing problems involve a GROUP of faster horses trying to pass a GROUP of
slower ones. None of the slower horses can pull off alone, because they
are "buddied up" (and indeed what good what it do for 1 horse to pull off
if the others didn't), and there is no room for them to pull off enmasse.
Theoretically, the faster horses should "weave" one at a time thru the
group of slower horses. IRL (see I learned an acronym too!) this never
seems to work, due I believe to lack of skill on the riders' parts.
Comments??
