Hello everyone,
I was reading all the archives on the
alfalfa subject. I couldn't stay quiet
any longer. I live in Mohave County, AZ
and we grow most of the alfalfa here in
this county and most of it is grown in
Mohave Valley, outside of Bullhead City,
AZ. I live about 60 miles from there.
We do not have much of a choice in hay at all.
Everyone thinks that alfalfa is the best
thing in the world out here. I am not
so sure now because I had my old gelding
(25 yo) die of an enterolith. I am
trying to get as much grass hay (Bermuda) as I can but they all laugh
at me because they don't think I can
maintain horses on bermuda grass hay.
In the winter I do feed alfalfa to keep
them warm as they don't have a run in
shelter but I try and substitute with
pellets of half alfalfa and half
bermuda grass and when they do have
some grass hay, I buy as much as I can.
I have two arabs and I can see a
difference in their behavior with
bermuda and alfalfa. They (my 4 yo
gelding) get really cranked with fresh
alfalfa and is quite obnoxious. Back
to the grass hay and everything is
fine. My girlfriend used to live and
goes back to ND and rides arabs and she
says they are so well behaved on grass
that she is astounded, not like our
arabs that are quite obnoxious and hard
to handle. Has anyone else noticed
this? Janet

We pay about $3 per 60 lb square bale, but I was astonished at what
some Californian's pay!
