Paddling

I am contemplating the purchase of  a horse who paddles.  I just don't
know if this gait aberration is a serious enough to rule him out as a
distance candidate.  I'm looking for a horse to eventually compete at
extended distance for many years.  I'm not a speedster - 7 mph will
probably be out top competition speed.

 How common is paddling among the horse population, and how common among
distance horses?  Any comments or suggestions?
