Just a technicality, but the anti-inflamatory action is WHY Bute is a pain
reliever. Inflamation causes pain, ergo by reducing inflamation, one reduces
pain. Not two separate functions here...

All pain relievers have a "mode of action". There are anti-inflamatories,
and these are divided into steroidal and nonsteroidal (bute and Banamine are
in the second category, hence the acronym NSAID's--non-steroidal anti-
inflamatory drugs). Then there are anesthetics--local and general, that block
nerve transmissions so that you don't know that it hurts. There are
narcotics, which alter your perception at the brain level so you have no
perception of pain. Etc., etc. But the anti-inflamatories are by far the
most common for all but the most intractable sorts of pain.
