I don't give quite that much time off. However, the type of riding I
do for up to 10 days after a ride is not a typical training ride. Lots
of walking and easy trotting just to keep limber. If there really was
an impending injury, it would become apparent pretty quickly, and the
horse should get the time off it really needs. If my horse is truly
'fit to continue' after a 50, I don't think its beneficial to have a
couple of weeks of standing around doing almost nothing, in order to
recover.
The easy workout routine is the way I used to treat myself when I was
a half marathoner. Too much idleness made it harder to return to work.
