on German rides the eletric fences are the *normal* way to keep horses at an
endurance event
(maybe because we don't have the big rigs with lots of space for huge
alu-panels...)

they are cheap, they can be used versatily on different ground (except
rocks) and can be set-up in 15 min. if the horse is used to it, electric
fence is a very safe way to border it and let it graze. it's more a
psychological type of barrier, but it works.
of course for one or another reason, horses decide to break out sometimes.
usually because of humans' negligency (power is off). typically injuries are
small compared to these caused by other fences, wood, or picket-lines. ...I
don't want to know how a panicking horse will look like after an attempt to
break out of a metal corral...

my suggestion for electric fence is, take care that the power is on, and
that your charger is stronger than your neighbors...

(lifetime of the batteries will depend on their size, power of charger and
time of usage. with the small charger you need for a small electric corall,
it should last for years.)
