research at Manzanita

Hi guys,

Well, we're done crunching numbers at Tevis, so our research group is
moving on to taking some measurements at other rides covering different
types of terrain, 50's as well as 100's. Alot of people questioned how
applicable our results would be applied to different conditions, and
suggested we collect data at other types of races---so fine, here we go.

Terry Woolley-Howe has graciously given the Equine Research Center
permission to come collect data at the Manzanita 50/Desert Pines 100 on
Oct. 3. I'll be measuring a few things on the horses while you wait in
line for your pre-ride vet check. Heart girth, body length, cannon bone
and a condition score.

I also need to collect rider weights with tack, so someone will be
coming around to the rigs with a scale to ask your rider to climb on
with the tack you'll be carrying the next day (I promise, we'll keep the
weights quiet)<g>.

Is there anyone that's interested in helping me collect data on Friday?
Normally, I shanghai students from Cal Poly, but I'm going to be in
Japan until just a few days before the ride and don't have much time to
wrangle help. I need someone to go around camp and help weigh riders,
which will take most if not all of the afternoon and possibly into the
evening as rigs arrive.

If you can volunteer, contact me at the above email or after Friday,
Sept. 18 (that's today), contact Terry at cancer@inetworld.net (sorry,
Terry).

The last two studies done as part of this project have both given new
and PRACTICAL information as what physical factors affect endurance
horses and how. I'm leaving Sunday morning to go to Japan to present
the 95-96 Tevis study to the International Conference of Equine Exercise
Physiologists and the '98 study is being presented next June at the
Equine Nutrition and Physiology Symposium. Not to pat myself on the
back, just to let you know this isn't pattycake research, it's the real
thing. You folks wanted this project, so here's your big chance to get
involved. And BTW, we'll also be collecting data at other rides
throughout the next six-eight months, we just don't have the schedule
worked out yet.

Thanks in advance, hope to see some of you at Manzanita.
