Many years ago, at a BOD meeting, I suggested we do away with awards of any
kind. I received almost a standing ovation from my fellow board members!
Yes, we were having arguments on the subject of awards then, and I guess we
always will. Yet the competition factor is something that gives many riders a
goal. A lot of riders probably would not ride endurance without that goal.
Many of us would -- ride just for the fun of it -- but humans are competitive
creatures, just as animals are, and I believe we need to aim always upward to
achieve personal growth. It would save AERC a lot of money not having to buy
awards, but I'll bet our membership would fall off radically. The beauty of
this sport is that it allows us all to ride in whatever manner we desire --
for fun, for glory, for good health, for adventure .....
