I think it could have something to do with how many run with 
their horses. Sandy Brown on the mule was certainly running 
(up the hill I'd just puffed up, and had to stop three times on)
at Squaw Valley. Steve Shaw (interesting looking horse, btw!)
also runs - obviously, being a ride-and-tier. 

I wonder if women, on average, dont' have the same strength/
stamina to get up and down the canyons *off* the horse?
