Re: upset tummy

The symptoms you are describing could be anything from ulcers to gall
bladder inflammtion to gall stones. Ulcers are EASILY treated with
antiobiotics but can reoccur as the cause is a bacteria called Heliobacter
pylori. Left untreated can cause bleeding to occur. Esophageal reflux can
also be the problem. Look up in good self help book, but if antacids are
not working, then a doctor visit is imperitive with some tests needing to
be done. There is also potential for cancer of stomach, depending on other
factors. If one has a history of smoking and alcohol use, cancer is
possibility. Just my opinion as RN. Mary Ann, Tx

Janie, I get the same thing happening to me---not during rides, just day
to day. In my case, it was partially because I have stomach ulcers (not
unusual in grad students) but it also happens when I just haven't eaten
enough and I'm doing something strenuous for a long time.

You might ask your doctor about it if it ever happens at other than long
rides. Otherwise, I've found that steadily munching on some sort of
complex carbohydrate will take care of it---it seems to be related to
just not enough food in YOU and low blood sugar and stress. Simple
carbos like Gu or fruit or fluids will help keep your blood sugar up,
but won't help the tummyache for more than a few minutes---at least
that's true for me. Anything like crackers or bread make the discomfort
go right away and just a bite every 20 or 30 minutes keeps it away. A
powerbar might be okay, you'd have to try it out yourself.

Good luck, I hope you solve the problem, I can really sympathize with
how uncomfortable it makes you feel.
