RE: YOUR UPSET TUMMY

Dear Janie:

I read your message about your upset tummy on your '97 Tevis ride.
While I agree with Susan that keeping something palatable in your
stomach may ameliorate the problem, there was something lacking in
your e-mail message:

You've experienced the problem on at least two different rides, but
you did not tell us whether or not you had consulted your personal
physician about a fairly serious stomach upset. If you have not done
so, would you please?

If your horse experienced debilitating digestive tract problems at the
70 mile mark, you would have the ride vet on him pronto, no? You owe
yourself the same duty of care.

If your stomach problem persists without evaluation and treatment, and
if it worsens on your next long ride, you could find yourself needing
medical attention in the middle of the wilderness. As an experienced
rider, what would you tell an amateur rider to do?

Don't ride in pain.

My comments offered strictly out of concern for your welfare.

Best, Susie.
