This is excatly how Ariats are made.  They have a steel shank
just like your mountain biking shoes and a gel insert.  And
they have lots of ankle support too.

I love them.  If you clean them after almost every wearing they
stay really nice.  I like the straight arrow leather cleaning
cloths that come like baby wipes.
