The woman I ride with (Christiane) rides stallion named Charlee. A month ago we rode our first 50 miles in Ontario (the Aprilfest) and it was wonderful. We kept to a slow steady canter and finished 22nd out of 26 finishers (48 started). I was really proud of the mare I was riding. Unfortunately Charlee did not get his completion certificat because his heart rate stayed above 70 for 4 hours after the finish. The head vet suggested an ECG and to look into the possibility of an electrolyte problem. So we returned home and let them rest for that week. Two days after the race Christiane noticed that Charlee's testicles were larger than usual. And he was still pretty tired. Five days after the race she took him out for a walk/trot ride. Nice and easy. By this time the mare I ride was ready to go again but Charlee wasn't. When they got back from their slow short ride his heart rate wouldn't come down and his testies looked larger again. Has anyone had a similar problem with their stallion. She is thinking of getting a horse jock. Does anyone else use them?
