Tevis Cup Survival and Endurance Riding Clinic

AUBURN, California -- A day-long endurance riding clinic with tips on 
surviving and succeeding in the Tevis Cup 100 Mile One Day Ride is 
scheduled for Wednesday, August 5, 1998, in Auburn, California, at the 
Gold Country Fairgrounds.  The clinic will be held three-days before 
the Tevis Cup Ride where nearly 250 riders expect to compete.  The 
clinic begins at 9:30 AM and features the following speakers and 
topics:

Steven Duren, Ph.D., will discuss his knowledge of and experiences 
with equine nutrition and exercise physiology particularly how its 
affect's endurance athletes.  Dr. Duren specializes in performance 
horse nutrition for Kentucky Equine Research, Inc. and is responsible 
for technical support and consultation.  Dr. Duren recently provided 
nutritional consultation for this year's Kentucky Derby winner.

Marcia Smith, DVM, last year's winner of the Tevis Cup, will offer 
clinic participants with insightful and useful tips for a successful 
finish.  Her topics will cover important aspects of aiding the 
endurance horse during and after competition.  Dr. Smith is the 1995 
North American Endurance Champion and has successfully participated in 
numerous International endurance competitions.  She is also the 1992 
Tevis and Haggin Cup Winner. 

Donna Synder-Smith, author and nationally recognized riding 
instructor, will present the advantages of using centered riding 
techniques to benefit both the horse and rider during endurance riding 
competition.  She will offer methods to increase riding awareness 
through audience participation in fun, easy to learn exercises.  Donna 
serves as a director of the American Endurance Ride Conference.          

Kate Riordan will present a "hand-on" demonstration of the Tellington 
Touch Equine Aware Method (TTEAM) to aid riders and their crew in 
caring for their horses during various stages of endurance 
competition.  Kate is well-known for her knowledge and practice of 
message therapy and holistic treatment in athletic equines.   

Mo Livermore will discuss the importance of pre-ride preparations and 
present ideas for aid and sustenance to keep riders at the top of 
their game during competition.  Mo is a multi-talented horsewoman and 
ultra-marathon runner.  She has effectively competed on foot and in 
the saddle by successfully finishing both the Western States 100 Mile 
Endurance Run and Tevis Cup 100 Mile Ride.  She has also successfully 
competed in numerous Ride & Tie Races and has ridden horseback 1,960 
miles over the Pony Express Overland Trail from St. Joseph, Missouri 
to Sacramento, California.

Other clinic topics include updates on the Western States Trail  and 
the Tevis Cup Ride.

All clinic participants are treated to sponsored continental 
breakfast, luncheon, mid-morning and afternoon coffee breaks, prize 
drawings and giveaways.  Exhibitors of the clinic will provide 
participants with a trade show of the latest endurance related 
products and services.  There will be an evening reception and outdoor 
barbecue hosted by the Western States Trail Foundation.

The Tevis Cup 100 Mile One Day Ride scheduled for August 8, 1998, and 
is the first and foremost long-distance endurance riding event of its 
kind in the World.  The historic Western States Trail used by the 
event crosses the rugged Sierra Nevada Mountains between Squaw Valley 
and Auburn, California.  Competitors from all over the World as well 
as throughout the United States and Canada compete annually.  The 
Tevis Cup Ride is celebrating its 44th Anniversary.

Reservations are now being accepted for the clinic and space is 
limited.  The cost to attend the clinic is $40 and there discounts for 
family as well as for Tevis Cup riders or crew members.  Exhibitor and
