Rescue Remedy

Rescue Remedy is a combination of flower essences developed by Dr. Ed
Bach in the 1930s in England. You can find it in most health food
stores. The identical formula can be found in a more concentrated
potency in Calming Essence, marketed by Global Health Alternatives in
Portland, Maine (800/4BECALM). I was researching this subject yesterday
for a small animal holistic newsletter that I edit and learned that
Calming Essence also holds more drops in the dropper than Rescue Remedy
(12 compared with 4) so it might also be easier to dose a horse.
As for dosage, Dr Bob Goldstein prescribes from four to 15 drops for
small to giant breeds of dog. I don't know if there is a "recommended"
dosage for horses but I do not believe it is dose-dependent -- perhaps
Kim H can respond to this. You can give before trailering, on arrival
and just before the ride -- anytime your horse is likely to be stressed.
Give yourself some as well to calm pre-ride jitters. You can give the
drops directly in the mouth or dilute in spray bottle and spray near the
nostrils and mouth. I do not know of any prohibitions against flower
essences or homeopathics.
Good luck!
