Hi Karen.  For us, fruits (especially citrus) and bread products
consumed at the same time commonly results in digestive distress.  We
now use special fluid replacement liquids with high carbo/electrolyte
values and seldom consume any solid foods during rides.

If you care to experiment, try a high energy liquid diet drink as your
energy substitute.  They are expensive but easily obtainable.  Depending
on your distance and ambient conditions, you may need to consume
supplemental electrolytes as well.   Beware of cheapo sports drinks as
they often contain too much sugar.  You know, for every high there is an
equal and corresponding low...   Also, try new things in a controlled
training environment, not at races.
