This is one of those "never say never" statements.

I take exception to this generalization and disparagement of pen work. I
spend a good amount time on pen work but it is not endless round 'n round
work. It is in hand ground work , lateral movements, collection, backing,
sidepassing and all done both on the lead line and free.  Then mounting from
the fence railing, walking under saddle learning cues and the like. None of
this work will lead to arthritis or unsoundness. In fact it is a good way to
strengthen and supple the horse so unsoundness is less prevalent.

where the condition of the horse is disregarded that causes the problems,
not the use of the round pen.
