camelbaks (was saddle packs)

I have to concur with Tina - particularly for things
that *I* want to keep on *me*: water (most important),
Leatherman, minimal first aid stuff, fud, etc. gets
stuffed in the Camelbak.

Oh, and don't forget to keep the map on you. It might
be more easily get-at-able on the front of the saddle,
but the horse won't need it when he's lost on his own
(no opposable thumbs); you will, on the other hand, and
may find it useful.

Anything horse related or not crucial - EZ boot, horse
bits and bobs, spare tack, rain coat, more fud, carrots,
extra pieces of string, dog collars (for tying stuff on),
chap stick, sponge, etc. can stay on the horse. If he disappears,
then I'll have to hope he has a good sense of direction...

Strapped to the saddle, I've got one of the "2 water bottle
holding + a little pouch on top" pommel bags, and have been
happy with it. I think it was from Sporttack.

I was a bit sad about two miles into our 50 miler when
I noticed that it seemed to be bouncing around a bit, but
then I discovered that I hadn't actually tied it on, so
it was only held on at the top. I ignored it until a few
miles later when we stopped for something else.

That seems to be the trick - remember to tie stuff on
*before* you start the ride.
