Horse Trails Issues

Linda, thank you for your post about trails, maintenance, and fallout
from the Clemson Symposium. I've been sort of waiting to read just what
you wrote; that behind the warm fuzzies on the surface, there are real
issues, serious issues, that could possibly close trails and staging
areas to equestrians.
Your account of the filthy corrals, etc., is pretty awful. I
wonder, though, how many parks provide debris boxes to use for soiled
bedding or hay? Not to excuse the negligent campers, but I recall a
time in a horse camp in our local state park where equestrians dutifully
bagged all the bedding, etc., and the pile of black plastic bags got
bigger...and bigger...some finally sun-rotted through and burst...before
they were ever picked up by park people.
Your post is a wake-up call for horsepeople everywhere, and I thank
you for putting it on Ridecamp. Will you send it to Doyle Patrick for
pubication in Endurance News? Cheers (;-), Connie B.
