Karen,

My experience has been that CTR was modeled after the old Cavalry trials. At
least the 3 day 100's were supposed to be a true test of the Cavalry type
mount. You could only feed what you carried on the horse. Yes you could feed
hay if you want to carry it with you. Some people do carry a small amount of
feed to give to their horses at the PR checks. The idea is to make conditions
as equal as possible for all the horses. So no crews, or supplies brought
out to you on the trail. Endurance rides have a similar classification in
those who are riding for the Cavalry award.
I rode CTR for 10 years and never had an adverse reaction to not having food
on the trail (except a hungry horse when he got back to camp :-) )
