Question regarding bit hangers

Shortly after I purchased my mare, it became apparent that she was
having a reaction to biothane. She would rub incessantly on trees or
anything she could. Her sweat under the biothane was a rich, creamy
lather, thick enough to make the old Prell shampoo commercials. My
answer was exactly as you proposed. I use the thin Hamilton halter and
purchased the bit hangers in nylon in a matching color from Teddy
Lancaster at Running Bear. These clip directly to the rings you
described. (do they even have a name??!). Instead of a bit, I use a
very lightweight aluminum English-type hackamore. This has very short
shanks, a leather and fleece nosepiece and a lightweight curb chain, a
very gentle configuration. Teddy also has the aluminum shanks and they
really make the hackamore very light. I have done several 50's and all
my training for the last year in this combination without any trouble.
The hangers aren't too pricey and Teddy can match colors to the Hamilton
colors pretty well. Good luck!!

Ps. Back in the young and foolish high school days, we would tie a bit
to the halter with baling twine and use lead shanks for reins. Off we'd
go, hither and yon, bombing across the Virginia hunt country without a
care in the world. This too, on a "crazy Arab <g>"!!
