TENS machines are designed to confuse nerves that are transmitting pain
signals--just the way acupuncture works. this is not healing, just pain
reduction.

However, when used to stimulate muscle contractions, then TENS machines can
reduce ongoing damage and encourage rebuilding of the injured parts.
