barefoot & wet ...ouchy hooves ?

Mystery's always gone without shoes in the pasture during the
wintertime. He grew up with no shoes and was ridden age 5-6 without
them. Past few years he's been religiously shod and ridden a lot, yet
still barefoot in the winter. Is there any reason not to expect he
should be able to be turned out barefoot in winter pasture as usual?

Reason I ask..with all this rain and everything wet, he is acting
"ouchy" and a little off just trotting out on hard ground (pavement). I
think his feet are sore because of the rain and constantly being
soaked....heels are plenty long. I'm waiting to see if this dry spell
hardens the hooves up a little. His feet shouldn't change just because
he's been shod during summers and worked a lot, should they? I never
saw him ouchy before in wet pasture, so, figured I'd ask!
