When I did my 2nd Mendocino ride, a 25 LSD (and training) ride, I was
told this by several people.

Part of my entrance fee is an examination of the horse by the vet. Of
course, the vets seem so far to go a good job of checking my horse out
and telling me if he is in good shape.

Mystery was a little "gimpy" 1/2 thru. I voluntarily pulled and we
walked the rest of the ride back to camp. He seemed fine by then. I
was encouraged to take him to the vet (who was just about finished up)
and politely ask if he would check him out again if he wasn't too busy,
that he had previously been pulled. The vet did, checked him out, no
problem, no additional fee.

I believe all of this was correctly done. But, if my horse was
coliced, sliced up, tying up or any ailment that required additional
vet care, I would expect to be charged less the farm fee. And I would
be asking what the treatment is and how much before anything is done.
My money is very tight and I don't care who knows, but my vet always
knows. You can spend as much money on a horse as you want, but just
use some common sense of what is really needed. If he was gonna give
bute and bute was in my tack room, I'd be giving the bute.

So how about it ride managers? Do you talk this over with the vets
before you hire them? Are equine vets really hard to find and hire?

I, am in complete aud and admiration of anyone who does have the
gumption to put on a ride!
