It comes down to a tradeoff. I manage a mail list called M-Talk that
is 100% spam-free. This is done by having a closed list, that only
accepts posts from subscribers. The downside is that "guest" posts
are not accepted. Also, people with multiple e-mail accounts must
either subscribe from each account or always post from the one they're
subscribed with. That's not as bad as it sounds, they can have all
but one subscription be a "no mail" subscription so that they only
receive mail at one address, but can post from more than one (assuming
Steph's list server supports this option).

I believe they tried running ridecamp as a closed list, and some
people complained. Personally, I'd prefer a closed list but it's
really up to the list owners how they want to handle it.
