Busted condition awards!! (long)

I remember smiling smugly while reading the thread on the Busted Condition
Awards, having only ever fallen off my current mare twice in the 7 years I
have owned her, and both of those landing on my feet! Well, unfortunately, he
who laughs last usually does not laugh for long. I definitely qualify for the
BC after being catapaulted off Pan at a canter last Sunday. I had
forgotten how hard the ground is when it comes to greet you, but I actually
got off not too badly-lots of grazes, swollen wrist and hands, bruised hip
and a very sore tummy where I slid on it. The bad news is that Pan grazed her
knees quite badly, the near side front being the worst, with mega amounts of
blood and not much skin left to stitch it together. Luckily, I had
bandaged her hind legs, (which I never usually do) so was able to put one of
those on her knee to staunch the flow of blood and get her home. She was not
lame on it until after we'd seen the vet, but after 2 days she seems to be
trotting around on it not too badly. I was concerned that it happened on a
hill, (she trod in a gully and fell on her knees, then rolled over) but the
vet says that I was lucky it was not on the flat, or she may have flipped
over and we could have skidded further with more speed behind us. Not that
I'm touchy on the subject of going fast up hills :) but I have seen the
same thing happen at a trot on the flat-one wrong step at any speed or
situation can cause a nasty accident. My Mum fell off her trusted
gelding at a WALK!! when he took a wrong step and ended up being
airlifted to hospital, a few years ago!? As careful as you try to be
with horses there's always that unpredictability. Still to see the vet again
tonight to check on any damage to the tendon sheath, am hoping and praying
she is OK. He has her on an anti inflammatory and anti biotics and I have
kept her bandaged with Flints Oil and Betadine on the wound which is very
deep, running down the knee. I didn't have any swabbing to use in place of
cotton wool, so have been using a light sanitary napkin for gauze on the
actual site, then a stretchy leg bandage on top with electrical tape holding
it all together- seems to hold very well. Any related experiences with
wounds, dressing and healing etc. would be much appreciated, also recovery
times and training methods after an injury like this. Now I know why I don't
want children, it's bad enough when you have a sick horse!:(

syringes of yucky white stuff!!!) and Al Jahara.
