I've been lurking here for months and enjoying every minute of it, and
finally thought I might actually have a little something to add to the
great information on this list!

I have one horse who is particularly sensitive in the girth area.
Although I haven't noticed any swelling he frequently gets quite
sensitive and flakey skin behind the elbow, particularly in hot humid
weather. I've tried all kinds of girths--leather, neoprene, fleece,
web, etc. and the only type that prevents the problem is mohair string
girths. I ride in a very sandy area and have not had problems with sand
accumulation either. And, they're relatively inexpensive, somewhat
stretchy, and are easily washed in the washing machine.
